  1. One More Time

From the recording We were the endlings

Many years ago, an old friend of the band and musical colleague of Bowers’, Chris Boyce, came up with the lyric and melody of the line ‘Tell me that you love me, one more time’. David was so moved and bewitched by it that he couldn’t let it go. He spent a decade building a song around it, which became an Endlings/ Sunshine Tip favourite and the first number the band would usually play at their gigs.

It’s about those times in a relationship when one person knows that the other doesn’t actually love them any more - well, maybe there’s some love, but it’s not like the relationship is going to work in the long run. They know it’s going to end, but they need to know that it *did* matter, and that *they* mattered, and that it was real.

Moving beyond the story of one relationship, the ships in the bay represent larger forces at work that change lives forever. Maybe someone is leaving their home and loved ones for another land. People say goodbye to their countries and families and when the big screws start turning, the deep waters churning, a ship is starting up. But it’s also about a feeling in your guts, your soul, that feeling everyone knows, of ‘Oh fuck, this is starting to happen…’ when all the mud gets churned up.

In the deep there’s the old endless fight - literally under those ships in the bay there are fish, crabs, prawns trying to kill each other. But this is also true, in a different way, for every individual human being: inside there’s the old endless fight: should I do this or that? Should I confront this person, quit that job, make that change?

Lyrics

Tell me that you love me
One more time
Tell me that you love me
One more time
One more time

Shielding your eyes from the sun
Nobody taught you to run
Kicking the hours away
Big ships at rest in the bay
We know the storm’s gonna come
Hearing the thunder roll
On and on and on
On and on and on

Deep water starts heaving
I know that you’re leaving but
Tell me that you love me
One more time
Tell me that you love me
One more time
One more time

Black water shines in the night
In the deep there’s the old endless fight
Turning tide calls all women and men
Big ships are moving again
I know that soon you’ll be gone
Watching the traffic roll
on and on and on
on and on and on
Big screws start turning
The deep water’s churning and

Tell me, that you love me
One more time
Tell me, that you love me
One more time
One more time
One more time

Tell me that you love me
I’ll light up like a carnival sign
If you tell me that you love me
One more time

Tell me that you love me
I know you can never be mine
But tell me, that you love me
One more time

So tell me, that you love me
